Migration recently has been discussed in a very negative context. As Europe and the US moved towards right, we have to rethink human mobility and push for informed debates. Terminology used to describe migration and refugees is old, out dated and problematic. They were largely designed for the Cold War era and for a special category of people. The 1951 Geneva Convention had set the ground rules for treating refugees. Then, economic growth was the dominant character with clear need for foreign labour as Germany and other European countries signed multiple bilateral labour exchange agreements with the countries in the South to recruit millions of “guest workers” from the 1950s till the early 1970s.

Syrian crisis resulted in at least 6.1 million externally displaced people 983,876 of whom are in Europe while the rest are in neighbouring countries in the region. Turkey, due to its geographical proximity and substantial land borders with the country, has been the most popular destination for those fleeing Syria since April 2011. Especially after 2012, a sharp increase in the number of Syrian refugees arriving in Turkey was witnessed. This has triggered an exponential growth in academic and public interest in Syrian population. Numerous reports mostly based on non-representative sample surveys have been disseminated whilst authoritative robust analyses remained absent. This study aims to fill this gap by offering a comprehensive demographic analysis of the Syrian population. We focus on the demographic differences (from 1950s to 2015) and demographic trends (from 2015 to 2100) in medium to long term, based on data from World Population Prospects (WPP). We offer a comparative picture to underline potential changes and convergences between populations in Syria, Turkey, Germany, and the United Kingdom. We frame our discussion here with reference to the demographic transition theory to help understanding the implications for movers and non-movers in receiving countries in the near future.

The European Union (EU) has faced one of its biggest crises with the rise of population inflows through its Eastern and Southern neighbours as well as movements within the Union. In 2016, the main debate that dominated Europe was on restricting migration within and into the EU along with concerns and objections to the refugee quota systems and the sharing of the burden among member states. Turkey emerged as a ‘gate keeper’ in this crisis and has since been at the centre of debates because of the large Syrian refugee population in the country and billions of Euros it was promised to prevent refugees travelling to Europe. The Syrian crisis produced over 4.8 million refugees with over 2.8 million were based in Turkey by the end of 2016. Turkey with its generous support for Syrian refugees has been confirmed as a ‘country of security’. This shadows the darker side of affairs as the very same country has also produced millions of asylum seekers since the 1980 military coup. Current circumstances and fresh evidence indicate that there will be more EU bound refugees coming through and from Turkey.

LITTLE TURKEY IN GREAT BRITAIN by Ibrahim Sirkeci, Tuncay Bilecen, Yakup Costu, Saniye Dedeoglu, M. Rauf Kesici, B. Dilara Seker, Fethiye Tilbe, K. Onur Unutulmaz is about Turkish movers in Britain. Turkish migration to British Isles has a long history but sizeable diaspora communities and enclaves of Turkish origin have emerged only in the last four to five decades. Earlier groups arrived were Cypriots fleeing the troubled island in the Eastern Mediterranean whilst Turks and Kurds of the mainland were not even considering the UK as a destination. This book is about these contemporary movers from Turkey, their movement trajectories, practices, and integration in Britain. Eight researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds and methodological schools came together to do the ground work for the students of this emerging subfield of human mobility studies. Turkey is now at the forefront of accommodating large scale inward mobility mostly due to the crisis in Syria and Iraq. This also brings some attention to Turkey's own diaspora populations.

Remittances Review is a new journal that offers a quality outlet for
exchanges between academics, researchers, and policy makers.
There are more journals dealing with migration than ever before,
and most have similar mandates to publish research for researchers.
There has been a proliferation of journals in migration studies in the
last five to ten years. However, most have grown with similar
mandates that replicate breadth and interests. Remittances Review
is the first international academic peer reviewed journal dedicated
to money transfers, migrant remittances and the challenges and
issues related to these flows across borders. Remittances Review
invites contributions that include new data, rigorous research, and
thoughtful analysis. We expect quality contributions that advance
theory and methods as well as drawing implications for policy and
practice. Readers will benefit from cutting edge research
conceptual innovations, and reviews and reports.

We approach Turkish mobility using a culture of migration perspective with reference to conflict. Conflicts are defined broadly into an array of situations including minor disputes, tensions or latent conflicts on the one hand and major violent events on the other. These situations, defined along a security continuum shape individual perceptions. Increasing perceptions of human insecurity are positively correlated to a rise in migration propensity. Applied to Turkey’s international migration history we note that major conflicts have determined inflows and outflows of populations and created a Turkish culture of migration, which reinforces continuous population flows between countries of destination and origin. Migration flows between Germany and Turkey are exemplary in this regard.

In Part 1 of this volume, James Carrier argues that anthropology finds itself in the midst of two crises. The first is internal, emerging from concerns over the future of our field and the role anthropology can play beyond the academy. The second is external, emerging from the economic crisis that began in 2008 (and which, though officially over, continues to challenge populations around the world). Although they have very different origins, Carrier says that both are reflections of neoliberal ideology and policy. The discipline's external crisis was brought about by the failure of neoliberal economic policy; the internal crisis reflects the influence in the discipline of a world view that echoes the neoliberal approach to people defined as independent actors who should be free of social constraints that can limit their ability to act as they wish. Echoing the tenets of neoliberal ideology, the proponents of neoliberal reform argue that they seek to promote individual freedom at the local and the national level, by removing the constraint of government control of economy and society. This not only promotes that freedom, they argue, it also facilitates economic growth. Those proponents recognise that there may be societal losses, and that impoverished, rural communities may be particularly at risk, but they argue that this is a small price to pay for the greater freedom and prosperity that will come to urban populations and to the country more generally (see the discussion in Huber and Solt 2003). Neoliberal ideologies and their emphasis on the individual as a decision-maker tend to limit the strength and logic of anthropological investigations that focus on individuals as members of social groups. One aspect of this is the neoliberal argument that the community is coercive and limits the individual, which leaves little space for the anthropological study of society and the contests that surround social belonging. Another aspect is the way that neoliberal ideologies construe people as economic beings, rational decision-makers who are motivated by the drive for personal gain and success rather than shared values and practices, which can only hinder their efforts to achieve that success. In this chapter, we examine the rise of neoliberal ideology and the growth of neoliberal reforms as they relate to the study and practice of migration. We argue that migration neither can nor should be reduced to the decision of an individual mover or migrant. Instead, we argue that it should be approached as a

In this paper we explore the rise of Turkey as a destination for new migrants including the children of Turks and Kurds who emigrated to Europe and Germany over the last five decades. An environment of social, economic and human insecurity dominated migration from Turkey to Europe and in particu-lar Germany over the last five decades; and today, shifts in Turkish society, economy and security are attracting migrants to the country. Ethnic conflicts were one key factor driving migration in the past and as we note, they continue to moderate the relationship between socio-economic development and emi-gration rates for Kurdish movers in the present. Nevertheless, we argue that the growth of the Turkish economy and increasing social freedoms support an increase in immigration to Turkey. Immigration to Turkey includes returnees as well as second and third generation Turks from Germany among other places.

Cultures of Migration
The Global Nature of Contemporary Mobility

By Jeffrey H. Cohen and Ibrahim Sirkeci

Around the globe, people leave their homes to better themselves, to satisfy needs, and to care for their families. They also migrate to escape undesirable conditions, ranging from a lack of economic opportunities to violent conflicts at home or in the community. Most studies of migration have analyzed the topic at either the macro level of national and global economic and political forces, or the micro level of the psychology of individual migrants. Few studies have examined the "culture of migration"—that is, the cultural beliefs and social patterns that influence people to move.

Cultures of Migration combines anthropological and geographical sensibilities, as well as sociological and economic models, to explore the household-level decision-making process that prompts migration. The authors draw their examples not only from their previous studies of Mexican Oaxacans and Turkish Kurds but also from migrants from Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, the Pacific, and many parts of Asia. They examine social, economic, and political factors that can induce a household to decide to send members abroad, along with the cultural beliefs and traditions that can limit migration. The authors look at both transnational and internal migrations, and at shorter- and longer-term stays in the receiving location. They also consider the effect that migration has on those who remain behind. The authors' "culture of migration" model adds an important new dimension to our understanding of the cultural beliefs and social patterns associated with migration and will help specialists better respond to increasing human mobility.

In this paper, I discuss transnational mobility using a perspective that emphasises conflicts at macro, mezzo and micro levels while seeking ways in which such a conflict model of migration can be developed. I outline areas involving different degrees of conflict which are better seen on a continuous scale ranging from potential and latent tensions to violent conflicts and wars. Conflict aspects contribute to the dynamic nature of transnational human movements and, at the same time, appear to be antithetical to globalisation. The tensions/conflicts at individual, household, community, and state levels are not isolated from each other but inter-connect
different levels. Within this conflict conceptualisation,  transnational mobility appears as a move from human insecurity to human security.

Migration is difficult to analyse: the process is complex, the data poor, and the theory unsatisfactory. In addition, it suffers from unpredictable policy changes. But what is clear is that the UK and the other member states of the European Union currently face significant population fluctuations characterised by an ageing population and an increase in migration. Births and deaths are well-recorded in the industrialised countries and demographic techniques enable reasonably accurate projections. However, migration registers – the number and characteristics of people entering and leaving an area - are not equally good and reliable in all countries.

Is it time to drop the word migration? Profs Ibrahim Sirkeci and Jeffrey Cohen think so. They argue migration scholarship uses 2worn out language" and needs a reset. Lets use "mobility and movers" instead of "migrants and immigration" to replace words which carry negative or jaded associations with general public.
We have been advocating for a change of terminology regarding migration since about 2005. Of course we were not alone in criticising the worn out language of migration scholarship. This is evident now as we see more and more studies and courses using "mobility" rather than migration. Although it is obvious that for a while, both terms will be used simultaneously to avoid confusion. Nevertheless, a change is critical if we are to better capture and understand what migration means in the contemporary world

This paper discusses possible relations between conflict and international migration, with specific reference to the most recent war in Iraq. Iraqi international migration trends are examined to ascertain the potential influence of war on migration. Conflict situations have been prevalent in Iraq for
more than two decades, the roots of which can be traced back to 1979 when Saddam Hussein became the President of Iraq. Iraqi history, in the last quarter of a century, has been characterized by wars and post-war crises, which have subsequently triggered ethnic tensions. It is these ethnic
tensions, I will argue, which facilitated international migration from Iraq. It is the overall instability associated with conflict which often leads to increasing tensions among different ethnic groups, such as Kurds, Turkmen, Shiites, and Sunnis. Ethnic conflict situations can result in a general environment of insecurity, which may serve as an “opportunity framework”
for those already harbouring individual migration “plans”. It is western European countries which will be particularly influenced by these potential migration movements. During periods of conflict, Iraqis have established migration networks, and formed significantly sized immigrant communities in the West. It is these networks which will also serve as facilitating factors for the potential ethnic migration of some Iraqis.

Ethnic and religious conflicts, power struggles and wars have determined and shaped the fate of contemporary Iraq throughout the second half of the last century and into the new millennium. These conflicts have largely prevented the collection of data and therefore healthy analysis of the country’s demography for a long while. The demographic engineering took place during the Baath regime and perhaps still in progress in the country is one key reason why the international community as well as Iraqis themselves do not know for sure what the country is made of, ethnically and religiously. Therefore all studies and reports on Iraq are based on partial data which can be controversial as there is practically no reliable population frame from which anybody can draw representative samples or test the representativeness. The two surveys forming the basis of this book/report are also not free from that potential fallacy. However, given the paucity of data and analysis from war torn Iraq, every little research helps a great deal to understand population dynamics in the country and possibly inform the
national and international policy choices. The two international migration surveys were conducted in Iraq and Turkey respectively. The one conducted in Iraq targeted Iraqi Turkmen households in major cities and towns in the North and Bagdad. The chosen areas where sizeable Turkmen populations exist were surveyed by a random sampling
method employed in the field. Although 1500 households were aimed to reach, our field teams were only able to complete questionnaires in a total of 1040 households. About one third of the households were identified as migrant households where at least a member of the household is a migrant or was once a migrant. This is a far higher figure than in many traditional migrant sending countries. The second survey was carried out almost simultaneously in major cities in Turkey, again by considering where large Turkmen immigrant communities exist. A total of 161 questionnaires were completed most of whom were randomly selected from Iraqi Turkmen Front registers while convenience sampling
was used to reach respondents in Istanbul. In line with my conflict model of migration, Iraqi Turkmen migration is following a pattern that corresponds to lows and peaks of various conflicts and degree of intensity of conflict in Iraq over the time. Turkmen’s perception of relative security in Turkey and other destination countries in comparison to relative insecurity in Iraq is the key driver in their international migration experiences. Apparently background variables such as age, gender, income, education and employment are all playing their part in the decision making. Nevertheless, the wars Iraqis have faced and suffered from during the last two or three decades drew the line between moving and not moving as well as deciding when to move. The largest portion of outmigration took place after 1990. It was found that Turkmen is a well-educated population with a high tendency to move abroad, particularly to Turkey due to historical and cultural ties. Possibly in response to the tightening immigration admission regimes across the board, as many as 50 per cent of all Turkmen migrants crossed borders without necessary papers or overstayed their permits and visas. This study presents a story of an unsettled minority population in Iraq and indicates high emigration pressures felt by Turkmen. Given the current uncertainty prevailing in Iraq, one would expect many more have left since our fieldwork and many more are likely to flee their homes in the future unless a multi-ethnic peace is secured in the country.

Ethnic conflicts and wars have been a significant factor determining minority populations’ outflow from Iraq. Turkmen
as such minority have been subjected to oppression.
Limited economic opportunities combined with the effects of
wars imposed an environment of insecurity on Turkmen.
This has further facilitated and promoted emigration as it offered “opportunity frameworks” for capable segments of this
particular ethnic group. This paper presents findings from a
survey conducted in Iraq in 2004 reaching 1040 Turkmen
households. Systematic discrimination and ongoing internal
and international conflicts and wars forced Turkmen as well
as others to flee.

This thesis examines the motivations, mechanisms and prospects of Turkish Kurdish international migration in relation to the Environment of Insecurity as a set of combined socio-economic and political factors triggered by an ethnic conflict. The analysis focuses on three different, but complementary, levels of analysis. The research comprises first, the analysis of the environment of insecurity in Turkey emphasising its broader socio-economic, legal-political, and demographic aspects; second, the patterns and processes of international migration involving Turkish Kurds investigating the motivations, the mechanisms, and the future migration potentials; third, the role of the expression of ethnicity and of ethnic conflict.
A mixed method approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods to address different levels of analysis and different aspects of migration is adopted. The analysis of Turkish Demographic Health Survey data examines the extent to which an
environment of insecurity exists for Turkish Kurds. The findings of the Turkish International Migration Survey data outline the patterns of individual migration motives, mechanisms and future intentions. Finally, semi-structured in-depth interviews examine the role of the ethnic conflict and the expression of ethnicity to clarify the relationship between Turkish Kurdish international migration and the ethnic environment of insecurity while also presenting a live account of migration motivations and mechanisms.
The research shows that the environment of insecurity is an issue of ethnic conflict and it constitutes the major facilitating factor in Turkish Kurdish international migration resulting in large asylum migration flows. Due to the armed ethnic conflict between the PKK and the Turkish Army in Turkey during the last two decades of the last century, recent migration patterns of Turkish Kurds are dominated by clandestine migration. Along with legal migrations (e.g. economic, family, education), irregular migration appears as a strong trend involving asylum migration and illegal migration. Tightening immigration controls in Europe also prompts this. The conflict situation also serves as an opportunity framework for some who wanted to migrate. While migration is appearing as a liberating event for Turkish Kurdish ethnicity it is found that Kurdish
immigrants have not fully exploited the opportunities for exercising their ethnicity. However, for many, migration from Turkey to Germany is an act of escape and so is an expression of ethnicity.

"During the 2008 financial crisis, the possible changes in remittance-sending behavior and potential avenues to alleviate a probable decline in remittance flows became concerns. This book brings together a wide array of studies from around the world focusing on the recent trends in remittance flows. The authors have gathered a select group of researchers from academic, practitioner and policy making bodies. Thus the book can be seen as a conversation between the different stakeholders involved in or affected by remittance flows globally. The book is a first-of-its-kind attempt to analyze the effects of an ongoing crisis on remittance flows globally.

Data analyzed by the book reveals three trends. First, The more diversified the destinations and the labour markets for migrants the more resilient are the remittances sent by migrants. Second, the lower the barriers to labor mobility, the stronger the link between remittances and economic cycles in that corridor. And third, as remittances proved to be relatively resilient in comparison to private capital flows, many remittance-dependent countries became even more dependent on remittance inflows for meeting external financing needs.

There are several reasons for migration and remittances to be relatively resilient to the crisis. First, remittances are sent by the stock (cumulative flows) of migrants, not only by the recent arrivals (in fact, recent arrivals often do not remit as regularly as they must establish themselves in their new homes). Second, contrary to expectations, return migration did not take place as expected even as the financial crisis reduced employment opportunities in the US and Europe. Third, in addition to the persistence of migrant stocks that lent persistence to remittance flows, existing migrants often absorbed income shocks and continued to send money home. Fourth, if some migrants did return or had the intention to return, they tended to take their savings back to their country of origin. Finally, exchange rate movements during the crisis caused unexpected changes in remittance behavior: as local currencies of many remittance recipient countries depreciated sharply against the US dollar, they produced a 'sale' effect on remittance behavior of migrants in the US and other destination countries.

"Migrant remittances are an important source of external finance for developing countries. The current financial crisis is believed to have influenced migrant remittance flows as well as volume and patterns of use of remittances. In this special issue, a collection of cases from around the world is presented to understand the immediately felt effects of the crisis. Potential influences due to the crisis impact on migration patterns are yet to be seen and studied.

People move, finances move, so does the cultures, artefacts, goods and food. Remittances literature expanded significantly in the last two decades to cover more of what we refer to as social remittances. Social remittances refer to often intangible elements, cultural artefacts, habits, opinions, attitudes, beliefs, values transferred by migrants from destination countries to their home countries. Through studies on migrant remittances, we know that even in terms of financial transfers, remittances operate in corridors and in a two-way fashion. One third of remittances are sent to countries which are called " advanced economies ". United Kingdom, Germany, France are among the top remittance receiving countries as well as leading the table of sending countries. In this paper, I explore the ways in which social remittances change the foodscapes of destination countries with particular reference to Döner Kebab in the United Kingdom. Until two decades ago, Döner Kebab was a rare meal you would enjoy when holidaying in Turkey or if you happen to be in that cosy corner of North London. Nevertheless, in 2010s Britain, it became a popular fast food, particularly when it comes to what to eat after a night out. One may find an outlet selling Döner Kebab literally in every city, every town, every neighbourhood, every village in Britain. Multiple forces were in play in the making of Döner Kebab a British national food: 1) practicality of the food itself, 2) growing number of immigrants from Turkey arriving in Britain, 3) labour market disadvantages immigrants face, 4) asylum dispersal policies of the 1990s and 2000s, 5) declining incentives making small shops not viable economically, and 6) increasing number of British tourists visiting Turkey. In this article, a number of hypotheses are proposed for a conceptual model explaining the ways in which foreign food becomes part of the national food/cultural heritage in destination.

An increasingly global market with high human mobility within and across borders has posed new challenges and opportunities for marketers. To understand and address customer needs more effectively, this paper proposes to add emphasis on market segmentation variables such as change of residence, movement and commuting distance/hours. Following on earlier work on ‘mobile nationals’, a new customer segment, ‘transnationals’, is defined and elaborated. This segment includes immigrants, refugees, tourists as well as businesspeople and professionals whose careers span into several countries. These groups’ behaviour is influenced by multiple reference points (e.g. sending society, receiving society, diaspora culture, transnational corporate culture, etc.). The segmentation conceptualizations indicate the viability of such segments. Future research should focus on the identification of transnational segments while also developing and fine tuning the new variables – movement, change of residence, commuting and observable product specific behavioural issues for segmentation theory. This is an emerging and promising customer segment particularly for mobile marketing and mobile services.

Our departure point here is that the large volume of remittances sent can be an important leverage for development in countries of origin. The financial flows often follows the routes of international mobility. It means larger the expat population in a given country the more likely you will see FDI and remittance flows from these countries. This is evident in table 1: Six of the top FDI destinations from the UK appear among the 9 countries with largest immigrant stock in the country. It is also true that UK is one of the major source of remittances received in countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh thanks to large expat populations from these countries. The key fact here is that there is a strong link between financial flows (e.g. FDI and remittances) and migration profile (history, volume, composition). Hence countries with  established migration systems between are likely to have strong flows of FDIs and remittances. Then the question is what these countries are doing about it?

In an article based on his recent book, Transnational Marketing and Transnational Consumers, Ibrahim Sirkeci argues that there is a paradigm shift in business and marketing management. As the speed of communication and transportation increases, local consumers and organisations are ever more connected but not identical despite the blurring national boundaries. Companies face a tough challenge to achieve efficiencies while customising to the extreme to satisfy “glocal” consumers in this new era of transnational marketing.

Presents clear and crisp definitions of what is global, international, multinational, and transnational in the world of marketing
Explains the key features of a transnational marketing strategy, a key to the success of global small and large organisations, with many real-life examples and illustrations
Introduces insightful new concepts of Transnational Consumers and Transnational Mobile Consumers

Transnational Marketing and Transnational Consumers are becoming increasingly common in today's globalizing and fast moving world of business. This book presents a fresh perspective focusing on the transnational character of organizations and firms while underlining the importance of the transnationality of marketing strategies for success. At the same time, it introduces the novel concepts of Transnational Consumers and Transnational Mobile Consumers which take into account the increasing human mobility and its implications for marketing success. This book gives flesh to the ever popular shorthand "glocal" referring to strategies thinking globally but acting locally. This is the reality of current business environment where the norm is fast mobility of goods, services, finance, and consumers.

Purpose – This study aims to examine the role of product attributes, applying the multi-attribute model, on consumers' decisions to download digital music via unauthorised sources in the UK.

Design/methodology/approach – The data were collected through an online survey. Consumer choice was measured through three sets of questions built on Likert scales to identify individuals' evaluation of importance placed on the eight attributes, when making a choice, and level of satisfaction with those, both for purchasing and downloading. Two logistic regression models are developed using background characteristics and responses to these three sets of questions. The consumer choice between purchasing digital music and downloading through unauthorised channels was analysed in regards to eight product-specific attributes.

Findings – The results show that illegal downloaders expect a similar utility from both channels, while others tend to have a more positive attitude towards their chosen channel (i.e. purchasing). Background characteristics such as age, gender, education, and income show some relevance to the choice of music downloading channel. Regarding the importance attributed to and satisfaction from the eight product attributes, security of the source, variety of available music, quality, copyright, and legitimacy of the source are found to be significant in determining the choice.

Practical implications – This study is likely to guide digital music providers in designing their marketing plans using key attributes and consumer perceptions.

Originality/value – This is a rare study of downloading behaviour in the UK using a mixed population sample which is not dominated by students. Findings question the weight of price in decision making.

Keywords: Consumer decision making, multi-attribute model, digital music, piracy, copyright, illegal music download

This paper presents an analysis of the ethnic breakdown of the population in England and Wales and show the potential of ethnic market segments. This study uses the data from 1991 and 2001 UK censuses and 2004 Annual Population Survey data to show the ethnic breakdown of the population in England and Wales. Since 1999, most of the increase in market value in terms of expenditures is likely to be generated by ethnic minorities in England and Wales. This study demonstrates that the ethnic minority market in England and Wales has rich opportunities to offer. Ethnic market in the UK is a fast growing market. This is a crude estimation of the market value but still indicates the broader trend. Further studies investigating both the customer expenditures and attitudes are needed to gain a comprehensive and insightful understanding of the ethnic market in the UK. This is the first analysis of the ethnic market potential in the UK based on the 2001 Census data which was released in 2004. The brief analysis could be helpful for practitioners who might be targeting ethnic segments in the UK. It is also a starting point providing a brief examination for those considering further research on the subject. This paper offers the first ever review of the ethnic potential in England and Wales based on the 2001 Census data. It also highlights the potential of this data for marketing research.

This case study looks at the development of a money transfer company in a dynamic and fast changing market. Transnational nature of the business as well as profiles of customers are emphasised. Ria Money Transfer is part of the Euronet, US based parent company. Aspiring to become the most progressive company in the sector, Ria deals with customers with backgrounds from all over the world. This is also reflected in the work force of the company. Operating in distinct environments, businesses are not only concerned with a multicultural body of customers, agents and clients but also multiple economic, political, technological environments with a large number of small and big competitors. This case study alludes to the questions about the key drivers of success for a transnational company with such complex web of markets, consumers, clients and competitors. Company information, direct quotes from representatives and media are used to illustrate aspects of the business and markets.

Turkey emerged as a 'gate keeper' in this crisis and has since been at the centre of debates because of the large Syrian refugee population in the country and billions of Euros it was promised to prevent refugees travelling to Europe. The Syrian crisis produced over 4.8 million refugees with over 2.8 million were based in Turkey by the end of 2016. Turkey with its generous support for Syrian refugees has been confirmed as a 'country of security'. This shadows the darker side of affairs as the very same country has also produced millions of asylum seekers since the 1980 military coup. Current circumstances and fresh evidence indicate that there will be more EU bound refugees coming through and from Turkey.

Migration Letters have become one of the primary outlets for scholarship and research on human mobility since the launch in 2004. As editors, we have encouraged, promoted and fostered new thinking as well as out of the mainstream cases and studies. In 2018, there are several special issues planned and very interesting collections of articles are already in the production stage. Colleagues who are guest editing these special issues managed to attract excellently interesting papers. Without harming the surprise element, we can hint about the subjects broadly. These special issues will focus on high skilled migrations, migration and crime, expatriates, family, intimacy. In this regular last issue of the 14 th volume, we begin with Cooke and Shuttleworth discussing the ways in which internet and migration might be connected with a focus on migration in the US. The second article by Yotebieng aims to set an agenda for understanding the entanglement of forced migration to urban areas and policy and practice potentials around urban refugee health. Nzima and Moyo in the third article elaborate a new construct they call " diaspora trap ". Ahmed in the fourth article discusses the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches in studying migration while also making a case for insecurity and migration debate. The fifth article by Aragonés Castañer and Salgado Nieto looks into the effects of climate change on rural populations and the circumstances under which some of them are forced to abandon their communities becoming part of international migratory flows. They found that the migration is the result of adverse economic-climatic conditions, because the poorest populations, which usually depend directly on natural resources, are the most vulnerable to climate shocks and the only way to overcome their vulnerability, has been international migration. The final article is our review of citations in migration studies. We have updated and expanded our 2015 ranking effort using Google Scholar data in the hope that these tables reflect the direction

Withdrawal (WD) is not a reliable method for preventing unwanted pregnancies, yet it is still a very popular form of birth control in many societies, including Turkey. We look at the relationship between women's agency and physical space in relation to birth control choices of women in Turkey. Agency in our context refers to a woman's ability to resist domination and subordination to the patriarchal beliefs valuing her reproductivity over her pleasure.
The determinants of the use of withdrawal in Turkey are examined using a multinomial logistic model.

Since 1999, municipalities have been one of

level for Kurdish political movement with local
people. Beside this, empowerment of local governments
have given a central role in Abdullah
Öcalan’s “democratic autonomy” solution for the
“Kurdish Problem”. Practices of those municipalities
have been shaped by the pendulum
between the hegemony of neoliberalism-Islamism
as the municipal policies in Turkey) and the processes
of clashes and negotiations between
government and Öcalan/KCK or PKK.
In this presentation, I will try to make a critical
evaluation of 15 years of municipalism
experience of cadres from HADEP to BDP by
the totality of their policies or practices. These
years have been also known as the years of the
empowerment of municipalities in the dimensions
of local autonomy and fiscal resources. Is
that empowerment carrying the potential of real
solutions to the problems arised from identity
and social-spatial problems?
In this paper, I will look for the questions
listed below: How could those municipalities use
those potentials?; What have been the potential
obstacles emanating from the mentality and practies
of municipalities; Has those municipalities
been different from the hegemonic neoliberalIslamist
municipal policies (if there is, from
which angles can we observe that difference);
how could we define the municipal practice of
HADEP-BDP line?

This study is mostly based on observations

The Migration Conference is a venue for academics, policy makers, practitioners, students and everybody who is interested in intelligent debate and research informed discussions on human mobility and its impacts around the world. The Migration Conference is an international peerreviewed scholarly event. The Migration Conferences were launched at the Regent’s Centre for Transnational Studies in 2012 when the first well attended international peer-reviewed conference with a focus on Turkish migration in Europe took place in Regent’s Park campus of Regent’s University London, UK. The Migration Conference 2018 is the sixth event in the series and coorganised by ISEG (School of Economics and Management) and IGOT (The Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning) both at Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal and Transnational Press London, UK. Previous conferences were held in London (2012), London (2014), Prague (2015), Vienna (2016), Athens (2017), and Lisbon (2018). The Migration Conference 2018 is organised with funding raised by registration fees and the following partners’ support: ISEG – Universidade de Lisboa, IGOT - Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, Tourism Office of Lisbon, Portugal, Global Migration Project - Ohio State University, USA, Gifford Center - University of California Davis, USA, Regent’s University London Centre for Transnational Studies, UK, Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy Graduate School of Law, Germany, Institut de Recherche, Formation et Action sur les Migrations, Belgium, Migration Institute of Finland, Hart Publishing, UK, Transnational Press London, Migration Letters, Remittances Review, Border Crossing, Göç Dergisi, Kurdish Studies, and Journal of Gypsy Studies.

We’re pleased to welcome you to Harokopio University, Athens in August for the Migration Conference. The 5th conference in our series, the 2017 Conference is probably the largest scholarly gathering on migration with a global scope. Human mobility, border management, integration and security, diversity and minorities as well as spatial patterns, identity and economic implications have dominated the public agenda and gave an extra impetus for the study of movers and non-movers over the last decade or so. Throughout the program of the Migration Conference you will find various key thematic areas are covered in about 400 presentations by about 400 colleagues coming from all around the world from Australia to Canada, China to Mexico, South Africa to Finland. We are also proud to bring you opportunities to meet with some of the leading scholars in the field. Our line of keynote speakers include Saskia Sassen, Oded Stark, Giuseppe Sciortino, Neli Esipova, and Yüksel Pazarkaya. The Migration Conference also offers training and development opportunities and participants are encouraged to register for workshops. Dilek Cindoğlu will be running a workshop on grounded theory while Jeffrey H. Cohen and Ibrahim Sirkeci will be leading the meet the editors session. As usual we allow significant time to focus on the host country migration debates. Apostolos Papadopoulos, co-chair of the Conference will moderate the roundtable debate on Migration / Refugee Crisis and its Aftermath: Challenges for migration policy in Greece in the evening of the opening day.

"With this book, we aim to shed light on changes in migration policy, determinants beneath these changes, and practical implications for movers and non-movers in Turkey. Nevertheless, one should note that Turkey has only recently faced mass immigration and the number of foreign born has more than doubled in less than five years. Such sudden change in population composition warrants policy adjustments and reviews. Policy shift from " exporting excess labour " in the 1960s and 1970s to immigrant integration today is a drastic but necessary one. Nevertheless, Turkish migration policy is still far from settled as several chapters in this book point out. Despite the exemplary humanitarian engagement in admitting Syrians, Turkey is still at the bottom of the league table of favourable integration policies with an overall score of 25 out of 100. Turkish migration policy is likely to be adjusted further in response to the continuing immigration."

TURKISH MIGRATION 2016 SELECTED PAPERS is compiled by Deniz Eroglu, Jeffrey H. Cohen and Ibrahim Sirkeci. These papers are a corrective to the limits of the poles and to any other models that seek to dehumanize migrants and cast refugees as the victims of processes they cannot control. Our interests range across the social sciences and the humanities and engage with experiences and theories that contextualize mobility and look beyond the limits of the news cycle to answer fundamental questions about mobility and Turkish migration. The voices represented define some of the very best work taking place around the world and exploring the outcomes of mobility. In this volume there are 40 contributions under four sections covering Syrians in Turkey, Turks abroad, identity, politics and legal aspects of Turkish migration.

Theories and models of contemporary migration often revolves around neofunctional models. They define migrants as rational actors who are focused on improving their economic, social, and political well-being which is enabled by access to opportunities that are not available in their origin communities and/or countries. Nevertheless, initiation of migration is largely driven by difficulties, discomfort, disagreements, tensions, and conflicts at the origin, while migration decision and destination choices are moderated by individual characteristics, cultural and social capital as well as by the local, national, and international context. In other words, people do not move when they are satisfied and comfortable with what they have and where they are. The number of movers around the world is relatively very small. The costs of migration and other moderating effects make international population movements an exception even today with an ever increasing mobility across the world.

"The studies collected in this edited book offer evidence to our argument that migration does not provide an ultimate response to insecurities in the home countries or conflicts in traditional destinations; instead as hinted in some of the contributions, migration shifts the balance of power and security as insecurity and conflict are negotiated in the process of migration with particular reference to the Kurds and Kurdish migration."

During the 2008 financial crisis, the possible changes in remittance-sending behavior and potential avenues to alleviate a probable decline in remittance flows became concerns.

The introduction is available below

The extent and quality of prenatal care are important for the health of women and their babies. Recent studies suggest that women lack adequate prenatal care in contemporary Turkey. This paper uses regression models to examine the major factors impacting on the access of women to prenatal care through the 1993 Turkish Demographic and Health Survey. The findings suggest that after controlling for class, ethnicity does not explain the likelihood of a woman's access to prenatal care, partly because the predominant patriarchal ideology in Turkey determines women's access to education, which in turn determines their access to prenatal care. It can be argued that unless women's socioeconomic status in the family improves, their access to health care in general and prenatal care in particular will not increase significantly.

Objectives The determinants of the use of withdrawal in Turkey are examined using a multinomial logistic model.
Methods Data were drawn from a nation-wide population-based cross-sectional study, the Turkish Demographic Health Surveys that took place in 1998 and 2003. Detailed interviews
were conducted with 8576 women aged 15–49 and analysed using SPSS.
Results Contextual, cultural and demographic characteristics define women’s choice of withdrawal over modern methods. Socio-economic status, education, employment status, and past fertility behaviour are among key determinants. First-ever used contraception method has a very strong impact on later choices. Urban women, the more educated, those
with better socioeconomic status, and those living in less crowded households resort less to withdrawal. Experience and empowerment positively linked to modern contraceptive use among women in Turkey.
Conclusions The use of contraceptive methods in Turkey differs greatly. Empowerment of women in terms of better socioeconomic status, better education, modern and liberal
attitudes towards women and family planning seem to reduce withdrawal use as the main method of contraception. The results suggest the need for education (particularly targeting
young women and couples), information and provision of modern contraceptive services particularly for disadvantaged groups.

Withdrawal (WD) is not a reliable method to prevent unwanted pregnancies, yet still a very popular form of birth control in many societies, including Turkey. We look at the relationship between the women's agency and physical space in relationship to birth control choices of women in Turkey. Agency in our context refers to women's ability to resist domination and subordination to the patriarchal values priming her reproductivity over her pleasure. Our analysis of the Turkish Demographic Health Survey (TDHS) suggests that (1) the available space in the household for possible private encounters in between husband and wife, and (2) the women's capacity to insert her agency into her life choices are closely correlated with WD choices. Women with better social and physical resources prefer withdrawal less.

Traditional source countries have been rapidly becoming destination countries. However, the fact remains that there are still countries with surplus populations and others who do not want any more migration. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, there were large population movements between Anatolia and neighbouring territories including the compulsory population exchanges between the newly formed Turkish Republic and Greece between 1923 and 1926. While the majority of non-Muslim minorities left Turkey, Muslim Turks moved in the opposite direction from the countries gaining independence after the collapse of the Empire. However what has put Turkey firmly on the international migration map are the mass labour migrations of the 1960s and 1970s. Following the energy crisis of the early 1970s, Turkish emigration found new destinations in Arab countries, Australia, and the former Soviet Republics in addition to the already established culture and routes of migration. Initial flows have been replaced by family migrations, refugee flows, asylum seeking migrants, and in more recent times the arrival of undocumented migrants in large numbers. Given this, we can identify five distinct periods in recent Turkish migration history: 1) the migration of mainly unskilled and skilled workers  dominating  the initial period from 1961 to 1973; 2) migrations due to family reunions  dominating the second period until 1980; 3) Following the military intervention of 1980, Turkish or Kurdish refugees seeking asylum in Europe, along with flows of contract workers to Arab countries in the 1970s and 1980s; 4)  flows of undocumented persons to Western Europe during the late 1990s and 2000s; 5) the boom in  migration to Turkey with Turkey turning  into an immigrant receiving country  in the 2000s and 2010s.

The new Turkish legislation (Law no.6458) regarding immigration and immigrants in Turkey was approved in the parliament in April 2013 and published in 4th of April.
Turkey has been an immigration destination for an increasing number of people in the last decade or so. Therefore the need for a new com-prehensive legislation was obvious. Following a relatively lengthy period of consultations, the new law came into force. In this study, we particularly focus on the implications of this new law for the protection of individuals from a human insecurity perspective and the deportation of apprehended immigrants and refused asylum seekers. A unified system proposed by the new law along with the newly created General Directorate of Migration is a step in the right direction. Thus, a harmonised effort in line with international human rights standards regarding the deportation issue can be expected. The deportation is restructured by the new law. The new law is drawing upon -often best- practices around the world and not solely based on the practice and experience in Turkey. Hence, the overall attitude is positive and human-itarian. This is evident in various aspects of the law. The new legislation supports the individuals who are accommodated in deportation centres by offering free legal aid to those in need as such is available for Turkish citizens. The detention peri-ods for the deportees are vaguely defined in many European countries. However the new law in Turkey clearly sets this period as up to 6 months. These clearer procedures are in line with interna-tional law. Similarly, in the new law, also a rather decentralised governance is proposed which is again very positive for addressing needs and wants of immigrants/deportees in different re-gions of the country without resorting to lengthy and cumbersome bureaucratic procedures.

In this short case study, we look at a relatively understudied international migration
stream, migration from Turkey to Denmark, with a focus on remittance-sending
behavior. Our analysis draws on recent fi eldwork carried out in Denmark in between
2008 and 2011, thus covering the most recent global fi nancial crisis. Such economic
crises are expected to have an adverse eff ect on the volume of remittance fl ows. We
have examined this eff ect in the case of Danish Turks, who represent the largest group
among Muslim immigrants in Denmark. Our analysis shows that the Turkish immigrants
to Denmark over several decades have developed a transnational space based on
frequent visits home and have maintained ties with the hometowns and villages in the
country of origin, Turkey. We therefore believe that such a transnational space plays a
role in the continuation of remitting practices across generations of Turkish immigrants
in Denmark and partly explains the resiliency of remitting behavior to the fi nancial crisis.
We have limited our analysis to the survey data and qualitative material we collected
during the fi eldwork. Nevertheless, our study also

Special Issue on the Syrian Crisis and its impact on Migration
Migration Letters invites contributions for a special issue on the Syrian Crisis and Migration. The deteriorating situation in Syria as well as immigration flow from this country has been identified as one of the biggest humanitarian tragedies of our time. Since the insurrections arose in Syria in 2011, the turmoil and violence has caused mass migration to destinations both within and outside the region. According to the UNHCR, 6.5 million Syrians are internally displaced and in addition more than 3 million have fled to neighbouring countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. Although the number is quite small when compared to neighbouring countries, a growing number of Syrians have sought asylum in Europe. Since the conflict shows no signs of abating in the near future, there is a constant increase in the number of Syrians fleeing their home.

With the growing insurrections in Syria in 2011, an exodus in large numbers have emerged. The turmoil and violence have caused mass migration to destinations both within the region and beyond. The current "refugee crisis" has escalated sharply and its impact is widening from neighbouring countries toward Europe. Today, the Syrian crisis is the major cause for an increase in displacement and the resultant dire humanitarian situation in the region. Since the conflict shows no signs of abating in the near future, there is a constant increase in the number of Syrians fleeing their homes. However, questions on the future impact of the Syrian crisis on the scope and scale of this human mobility are still to be answered. As the impact of the Syrian crisis on host countries increases, so does the demand for the analyses of the needs for development and protection in these countries. In this special issue, we aim to bring together a number of studies examining and discussing human mobility in relation to the Syrian crisis.

Bickhoff, N., Hollensen, S., & Opresnik, M. (2014). The Quintessence of Marketing: What You Really Need to Know to Manage Your Marketing Activities. Springer.

Bickhoff, Hollensen and Opresnik have posed the critical question again: What do marketers really need to know? The Quintessence of Marketing criticises the common view of marketing which places so much emphasis on sales and advertising whilst there is a wide array of activities that make marketing happen.

The book is designed more or less like a handbook for the professional marketer. At the opening, the value of many management books are questioned in terms of volume and length. Thus this relatively short book on key issues and challenges managers face in marketing is the answer according to the series editor.

This study examines the ways in which the city image of Istanbul is re-created through the mega-events within the context of the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2010. Istanbul “took the stage” as one of the three ECoC cities (Essen for the Ruhr in Germany and Pécs in Hungary), where the urban spaces were projected as the theatre décor while residents and visitors became the spectators of the events. Organisers and agents of the ECoC 2010 seemed to rebrand Istanbul as a “world city” rather than a “European capital”. With a series of transnational connotations, this can be considered as part of an attempt to turn Istanbul to a global city. In this study we examine posters used during the ECoC 2010 to see whether this was evident in the promoted images of Istanbul. The research employs a herme-neutic approach in which representations, signs and language are the means of symbolic meaning, which is analysed through qualitative methods for the visual data (Visual Analysis Methods), namely Semiotics and Discourse Analysis. The analysed research material comes from a sample of posters released during the ECoC 2010 to promote 549 events throughout the year. Using stratified random sampling we have drawn 28 posters (5% of the total) reflecting the thematic groups of events in the ECoC 2010. Particular attention is also paid to the reflexivity of the researchers and researchers’ embeddedness to the object of research. The symbolic production and visual representation are therefore investigated firstly through the authoritative and historically constituted discourses in the making of Istanbul image and secondly through the orders of cultural consumption and mediatisation of culture through spectacular events. Hence enforcing a transnationalisation of the image of the city where the image appears to be almost stateless trans-cending the national boundaries. Findings and methodology used in this study can be useful in understanding similar cases and further research into the processes of city and place branding and image relationships.

This study explores language shift and interregional migration among Turkey's Kurdish-origin population using census data as well as TDHS data. First, the geographical retraction of the Kurdish language between 1945 and 1965 is depicted using respective censuses as data sources. Second, patterns of intergenerational language shift and the effects of migration and education on this shift are elaborated utilising 2003 TDHS data and the 2000 Census data. Interregional mobility by birth regions and language concentration across Turkey has also been mapped. The Kurdish population in Turkey appears to be on the verge of near-universal bilingualism prompting concerns about the future of the language. Guherîna zimanî di nav kurdan de li Tirkiyeyê: Nirxandineke mekanî û demografîk Ev xebat, bi rêya tehlîlkirina daneyên serjimêriyê û herwiha daneyên TDHSyê, dikeve pey têgihiştina guherîna zimanî û koçberiya nav-herêmî di nav nufûsa kurd-regez a Tirkiyeyê de. Kurdish Studies as a journal and a scholarly community has grown significantly in recent years. We pride ourselves on being able to create a venue for scholarly exchange for those interested in the field. Our dedicated editorial team works tirelessly with the collective aim of publishing high quality research and scholarship. Behind the scenes we offer constructive academic support to both new and established researchers in the field through a meticulous peer review and feedback process. Without ignoring the dilemmas, the pros and cons of academic indexes, we are also generating some interest from well-known indexing and abstracting services. Besides RePEc, Kurdish Studies is now indexed and abstracted by EBSCO. For this we would like to thank both the authors and the anonymous reviewers for their contributions to the journal thus far. As always, we welcome contributions from researchers in Kurdish Studies and also proposals for special Journal issues.

Due to the large-scale migration from Turkey to Europe in general and Germany in particular Turkey has primarily been regarded as a migrant-sending country until recently. This image of Turkey characterizes, however, just one aspect of the Turkish migration history. Only since 2011 with the large influxes of Syrians and, there is a shift in the perception of Turkey as a destination country. Throughout history though, Turkey has always been a host country for sizeable inward population movements. There were several waves of population movements in the aftermath of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire: According to Karpat, between 1860s and 1922, around 4 million people migrated to Ottoman territories while later, about 1.5 million Muslims “were forced to take refuge in the Ottoman domains” (more or less the territories of modern Turkey). According to the Ministry of Resettlement, then Turkey received a total of 870,000 migrants of whom 400,000 were from Greece, 225,000 from Bulgaria, 120,000 from Yugoslavia, 120,000 from Romania and 10,000 from other Balkan countries.
Along with individually arranged movements, large portion of these migrations were organised as a result of the Lausanne Treaty’s compulsory population exchange which took place between 1923 and 1926. This population exchange had an important impact on the nation-building process, which involved transforming a multi-ethnic empire of diverse elements into a homogeneous state. Thus, parallel to the settlement of migrants of Muslim descent, there was the resettlement, displacement of Turkey’s non-Muslims who have been largely expelled in the first half century from the new Turkish Republic .

We are also debted to our wonderful keynote speakers who joined us and contributed greatly to the debates and discussions throughout the conference. Oded Stark, Jeffrey H Cohen, Giuseppe Sciortino, Yuksel Pazarkaya, Saskia Sassen, and Neli Esipova have offered rich and strong arguments underlining many key challenges in contemporary migration studies and migration management. In the TMC 2017 programme, besides a very rich array of academic disciplines represented by participants, also over 60 countries from 7 continents were listed among the places of origin. About 800 paper submissions were reviewed to select around 400 to be presented at the conference. At this point, we should also thank from bottom of our hearts for all colleagues who volunteered to review these submissions. Of course, naturally, the members of the committees put enourmous effort into this time-constrained and challenging task. It is important to acknowledge all the support given to the conference, which has continued to be an independent self-sufficient academic event surviving on participants' contributions and limited funding provided by Transnational Press London. We are pleased and proud to have been able to offer a number 2 of fee waivers and travel bursaries to young researchers who did not have means and otherwise would not be able to join. In future conferences, we will continue offering subsidised registration options for students, unemployed and retired colleagues and constantly seek additional funds for this purpose.
